Tom Storey
Thomas Victor Storey was a northern National Hunt jockey of the 1950s who rode 18 winners under NH rules, all bar two of which were for Kirklinton, Cumberland permit holder William Murray. He started out as an amateur and rode his first winner on Signal Point in a Catterick novices’ hurdle on November 22, 1952. They followed up by winning at Sedgefield on Boxing Day.

He rode five winners the next season, 1953/54, beginning with Joyful Light in a Sedgefield handicap hurdle in September for another Cumbrian permit holder, John Dixon. The other four were for William Murray, on juvenile hurdlers Mahfhappen and Hardy and novice hurdler Cold Perm. His three winners in 1954/55 were also for Murray, namely Mahfhappen at Kelso and handicap hurdler Niagara Falls at Wetherby and Haydock.

Having had his claim reduced to 5lb with the last of those victories, Tom turned professional the following season, 1955/56, but rode just two winners, while his three victories of 1956/57 were all courtesy of his old ally Mahfhappen.

It was April before Tom got off the mark for the 1957/58 campaign, but he did so in style with a double on his only two rides at the annual Rothbury fixture in Northumberland, on William Murray’s pair Migrate and Hardy. He won again on Hardy at Perth later that month. That would be the final one of his career.

Tom held a licence the following season but the nearest he came to winning a race was when finishing second on Hardy, beaten three lengths, at Perth on September 24, 1958. He appears to have had his last two rides, both for John Dixon, at Sedgefield on Boxing Day 1958.
