James Sharples

Jimmy Sharples was born in Newmarket on October 4, 1881, and was apprenticed to Joe Cannon at Newmarket at the tender age of nine.

Three years later, Jimmy moved to France, but, because of ill-treatment, soon returned to take up a second apprenticeship, this time with Fred Webb, with whom he stayed for five years.

Jimmy sometimes rode over the jumps.

He won the 1897 Cesarewitch on Merman.

He died at Wantage in 1935, aged 53.

Jimmy was related to the wife of celebrated entertainer and former jockey George Formby.
