Harry Sugden rode one winner on the Flat in 1947, followed by two over jumps in 1948.
He served his apprenticeship with leading trainer Sam Armstrong, and it was on one of his horses, owned by the Maharajah of Baroda, that he had his first success. This came at Sandown Park on June 27, 1947, when Gaekwar’s Pride beat Cliff Richards’ mount Invasion by two lengths.
Harry’s first ride under National Hunt rules ended in victory when King’s River landed the Plant Juvenile Selling Hurdle at Doncaster on November 27, 1948. Trained by Albert Cooper, King’s River got up in the dying strides to beat Montoria, ridden by Andrew Barclay, by a head. The pair scored again at Wetherby on December 27 when taking the Juvenile Hurdle (Division 1) by two lengths, having taken the lead three flights from home.
Despite those two wins, Harry did not retain the ride, nor did he enjoy any further success in the saddle. He had his final mount when Prince Neptune finished unplaced in the Rudgate Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Wetherby on January 21, 1950.
Harry's first and only winner on the Flat: Gaekwar's Pride, Sandown, June 27, 1947.
