George Spafford was a prominent amateur rider under National Hunt rules between the late 1860s and mid-1875, winning a total of 28 races.
He rode his first winner on Plum Cake, owned by Arthur Yates, in the Sunnyside Hunt Plate Chase at Bridgnorth on 2 April 1868, scoring by two lengths. He also rode Plum Cake in the 1869 Grand National but they were among the fallers.
On 4 March 1873 George won a match for the Great Midland Handicap Chase at Derby on Football. Two days later he rode Bar One to win the Horncastle Open Chase at the South Wold Hunt fixture at Horncastle.
George Spafford died on 11 April 1880.
