George Sloan

1939 - 2001


Wealthy American amateur rider, George Sloan was born in Nashville, Tennessee on February 10, 1939. A qualified lawyer, he also owned several health farms.

Based in Britain and riding for Josh Gifford, he was champion amateur rider in 1977/78 with 23 wins.

He rode his grey chaser Peccard in the 1969 Grand National but fell at Becher’s on the first circuit. His younger brother Paul Sloan also rode in that year’s race, getting slightly further on Terossian, refusing at the fence after Valentine’s, the tenth.

George achieved his biggest success on Earthstopper in the Mandarin Chase at Newbury on

January 1, 1983.

He died in somewhat bizarre circumstances on October 10, 2001 while out shooting on his farm in Tennessee. The gun he was carrying went off while he was clambering over a fence, killing him. He was 62.
