Descriptions:
(1) "Culms 7–12 m, 4–8 cm in diam.; internodes 20–45 cm; wall 4–10 mm thick. Branches from ca. 10th node up; dominant branches distinct, 1–2.5 m, 4–12 mm in diam. Culm sheaths initially orange-brown, becoming brown, oblong-triangular, about as long as internodes, thickly papery or leathery, margins ciliate, apex truncate or concave; auricles absent; ligule ca. 1.3 cm, with setae; blade reflexed, narrowly lanceolate. Leaf sheaths initially hispid; ligule 1–1.5 mm; blade lanceolate, 9–33 × 1.5–6 cm … [flowers and seeds described]." — Flora of China [#1303].

Uses: Dendrocalamus farinosus is recorded to have a high cellulose content and a low lignin content (Z. J. Long & al., Acta Horticult. Sinica, 47(S2): 3139-3140). When dry, the culms can readily burst lengthwise. The culms are not long-lived at Bambusetum Baan Sammi; in living clumps, they dry out after a few years (approximately 3–5 years). Nonetheless, the culms are highly resistant to severe winds, and storm-induced culm breaking has not been seen at Bambusetum Baan Sammi, either in living or dried culms. Young shoots edible, said to be palatable. Plants as garden ornamentals and for landscaping.
Comments: A variety with yellow stripes on lower culms, 'Flavostriatus', was recorded from China, but it is not known whether this variety has been introduced into Thailand.
Dendrocalamus farinosus (BS-0619): Young shoot with culm-leaf
Specimen: BS-0619 [E1] (living plant), raised from seeds, the seed collected in early 2011, received as "大叶慈竹 (dà yè cí zhú), Dendrocalamus farinosus" from FMXG, Yunnan, China, 1 Mar. 2011.
Characteristics: Young shoots emerge from April to September. Culm-Internodes to 9 cm in diameter. Branches several, the central one dominant, typically unbranched on the basal and lower culm, branched with small and short branches from the mid-culm up, with a central branch usually not developing on the mid-culm section but developing on the upper culm only; branching typically intravaginal, but extravaginal branching may occur on arching culms. Culm-leaf sheath 1/2 to 2/3 as long as the internode. Foliage-leaves 11–17 per branchlet. Foliage-leaf sheaths initially pale hispid. Foliage-leaf blades glabrous above, puberulous beneath.
Seed viability: Unknown, viability is assumed to last at least several months.
Seed weight: 10 g ≈ 280–310 dried spikelets (husk-wrapped seeds).
Seed germination: Seeds placed in moistened coir at 100%, in March 2011, 28–34 °C day temperature, diffuse light, 19–22 °C night temperature, atmospheric humidity >70%, coleoptiles emerged after 8 days, germination rate low (<40%).
Comments: The features of this specimen match well with the aforementioned descriptions, except for the length of the culm-leaf sheath.
