Distribution: THAILAND: The species was reportedly found (wild or naturalized) in riparian habitat along the northern mountains of the Salween (สาละวิน Salawin) region, Mae Hong Son Province of northern Thailand (Classification of Bamboo, 2012, as "Phyllostachys bawa" [#1223]), perhaps also cultivated. — MYANMAR: Bernardmyo (near Mogok, Mandalay Region); Kachin Hills east of Bhamo, at 2,000 m altitude (for Phyllostachys sedan). — INDIA (North-East). — CHINA: Guizhou, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet (Xizang), and Yunnan. — N. (1) "Habit: Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 1000-1200 cm long; 100-200 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes semiterete; thin-walled; light green. Culm-nodes glabrous. Lateral branches dendroid. Culm-sheaths 15-25 cm long; hispid; with appressed hairs, or erect hairs; with black hairs; without auricles. Culm-sheath blade linear; reflexed. Leaves cauline. Leaf-sheaths keeled; outer margin hairy. Leaf-sheath oral hairs scanty. Leaf-sheath auricles falcate. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 8-12 cm long; 12-16 mm wide; glaucous. Leaf-blade surface hispid; hairy abaxially. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Culm sheaths green or green-purple to purple, with pale yellow or yellow-green stripes, usually with sparse, small, dark spots, distal margins purple, apex broadly truncate or slightly convex; auricles absent to 2, purple, falcate, small to large; oral setae purple; ligule purple, usually slightly arcuate or truncate, relatively short, broad, with longer purple setae, white ciliolate; blade erect or sometimes spreading in upper sheaths, yellow-green or purple-green, triangular to linear-triangular, margins proximally purple, nearly flat to weakly crinkled.
