Uses: Shoots for food, delicious, widely marketed; culms for light construction, fences, furniture-making, farm tools, and tool handles.
Flowering and seeding: (1) The species flowered at Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in 1999. — (2) One plant, possibly the same species, was seen in flower at a low elevation on Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, in Jan. 2010. — (3) In the online seed trade, seeds were offered as "Gigantochloa albociliata" that did not belong to this species.
Flowering cycle: In Thailand, sporadic flowering occurs frequently; for gregarious flowering, a flowering cycle of 45–50 years is indicated [#1319], and 30 years in Assam, India [#1226].
Seed viability: Unknown.
Comments:
(1) The epithet "albociliata" alludes to the white ciliate spikelets.
(2) In Yunnan, China, Gigantochloa albociliata occurs naturally, as does Gigantochloa glabrata, and the latter species has been misidentified as G. albociliata; cf. Z. C. Xu & al., 2021: 37-45 [#1386].

Specimen: BS-0924 [-] (living plant), Phou Khao Khouay National Park ຄເຂິາຄວາຍ ภูเขาควาย near Vientiane, Laos, on foothills, received from บ. ต. as "Bambusa sp.?", 1 Dec. 2017.
Characteristics: Rhizome pachymorph. Culm-internodes covered with whitish fuzz, becoming scabrous with age. Culm-nodes glabrous, with the nodal line slightly protruding, supranodal line distinct and with a slight ridge. Branches several or many, central one much dominant but often not developed, side branches slender, subequal; branching intravaginal; rebranching. Culm-leaves deciduous, very short. Culm-leaf sheath length 1/4 or 1/5 of the internode length, abaxial surface densely covered with brown to blackish hairs on the lower half of the sheath, the upper part of the sheath glabrous or nearly so. Culm-leaf auricles rim-like, eciliate, extending from the blade base toward the sheath margin by increasing their height and ending as erect long-ovate lobes, not reaching the sheath margin. Culm-leaf ligule very long, parabolic rounded, entire or subentire, eciliate. Culm-leaf blades lanceolate, longer than the sheath, strongly reflexed. Foliage-leaf sheath glabrous. Foliage-leaf auricles lacking or inconspicuous, without bristles. Foliage-leaf ligule long, entire. Foliage-leaf blades lanceolate, upper surface minutely pilose, lower surface bluish-green, puberulent. Flowers unknown.
Comments: When BS-0924 was received, it was suspected that this species might not be a Bambusa species but Gigantochloa albociliata. However, only 4 years later, when the plant had grown larger, the essential vegetative characteristics could be clearly recognized and assessed. I am grateful to 许祖昌 (pers. comm. 10 Jan. 2022), Kunming Institute of Botany, for confirming the identification of BS-0924 as Gigantochloa albociliata.
