Suprageneric classification: subtribe Bambusinae J. Presl, 1830; tribe Bambuseae Kunth ex Dumort., 1829; subfamily Bambusoideae Luerss., 1893; family Poaceae Barnhart, 1895 (nom. alt.: Gramineae Juss., 1789); superorder Lilianae Takht., 1967; order Poales Small, 1903. — Soreng & al., 2017 [#1252b].

Distinctive characteristics: Filaments free, not fused; florets with 0 lodicules, or rarely 1; culm-leaf auricles and foliage-leaf auricles usually absent or inconspicuous. — Table 1 in J. X. Liu & al., Mol. Phylogen. Evol. 146, 2020 [#1351].
Comments: A recent phylogenomic analysis (J. X. Liu & al., 2024 [#1399]) revealed a paraphyletic Dendrocalamus clade with a small "Dendrocalamus 01" subclade separate from the core subclade "Dendrocalamus 02". This former subclade, "Dendrocalamus 01", comprises Dendrocalamus barbatus, D. birmanicus, D. membranaceus, and D. strictus, which are morphologically similar, and the latter is the type species of the genus Dendrocalamus. The other subgroup, "Dendrocalamus 02", is diverse and comprises many species, all hitherto placed in the genus Dendrocalamus. Maybe, this subgroup can be split up further, but homogeneity in morphological characteristics is not obvious. Or, perhaps, the entire group can be transferred to the genus Sinocalamus, with Sinocalamus latiflorus (syn. Dendrocalamus latiflorus) as the type.
