My name is Mrs. Brianna Smith, and I am the Response to Intervention (RtI) Coordinator, 504 Case Facilitator, and ESOL Case Manager at The Villages High School.
I have been with The Villages Charter School for seven years as a high school English teacher, but made the transition to this role three years ago. It is my goal to help each and every student be successful in his or her classes, so if there's ever anything I can do to help you, please don't hesitate to ask.
It is my job to help you succeed. Together, we can accomplish anything!

Parents and Students,
Please sign up for both the Google Classroom and Remind so that we can stay in touch about interventions. Our times and form of meeting may change at a moment's notice depending on the circumstances surrounding the hybrid learning environment this year, so it is imperative that we stay in touch. Please sign up for both website with your first and last name (especially Remind) so I know with whom I am communicating. Remind is also the fastest way to get a hold of me if you need anything!

Office Hours
I can be reached via email during the school day (7:15-3:15) each day. If you need to schedule a Google Meet with me, please send me an email or a message on Remind a day in advance so we can discuss the best time for a meeting. I will then send you a Google Meet link through which we will communicate. Please watch for this email, as it will be time sensitive.
I will also hold after-school office hours every Wednesday from 3:30-4:30pm.
In order to provide the most effective education for ALL children, we believe we must start with providing an effective education for EACH child. In the Sumter County School District, we utilize a three-tier approach with varying levels of support beyond that used as the core curriculum. The approach used is referred to as the Response to Intervention/Problem-solving Model (PS/RtI). This approach falls under the umbrella of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.
In the first tier (Tier 1) school-wide and classroom-based strategies are used. In Tier 2, we utilize student data to group students based upon a target skill need and provide appropriate research-based interventions. If the combination of core and supplemental instruction is not sufficient for the student to meet expectations, a third tier of instruction will be added. In Tier 3, we employ an intervention team approach.
We believe that the MTSS: PS/RtI three-tier model will prevent students from “falling through the cracks.”
Section 504 is a broad civil rights law which protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal funding assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.
The law requires the provision of free appropriate public education to eligible students.
It is NOT the same as an IEP. Students who have been identified as needing an IEP will work with the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) department.
The goal of the ESOL program is to help your child learn English in order to meet appropriate academic standards for grade promotion and graduation. As an English language Learner (ELL), your child will receive language and academic support until meeting exit criteria outlined in State Board Rule (SBR) 6A.6.0903
ESOL programs adjust instruction to the child’s strengths and needs by providing effective teaching strategies, as well as supplemental instructional materials or bilingual support.6 As a parent, you are encouraged to participate in developing your child’s Student ELL Plan.
Response to Intervention (RtI) is used to help students fill gaps in their learning. My goal is to teach you strategies to help make the curriculum understandable and accessible for you are your skill level. However, this cannot be properly done unless you, the student, are putting forth all of your effort in each class (i.e. no missing work, comes to each class prepared, etc.) Therefore, if you are currently in RtI, you are not allowed to have missing work in Skyward for the class(es) in which you are receiving interventions. Therefore, if, at any time, there is a zero added to Skyward because you are missing work, you will be required to stay after school with me TWO DAYS A WEEK until all the missing work is made up.
We are a team! In the RtI process, I work very closely with the student, parents, counselors, and teachers in order to ensure that each student is work to his or her potential and receiving the interventions that meet his or her needs. Part of our conversations every quarter will revolve around data. The grades earned by students on certain assessments will help the team to determine whether or not the student is closing gaps in their achievement because that is the ultimate goal of RtI. I want your child to be able to utilize the skills I've taught them in order to work on part with the rest of his or her peers. We will be collecting data many times throughout the process, so if you have questions about what this will look like, please let me know!
At the end of the day, my goal is for each of my students to be successful, and I will do whatever I can to help you be such; however, you must also communicate with me when you are struggling. Without this communication, I won't know how to help you. So, please, talk to me when you're feeling the pressure of academic life weighing you down. Together, we can figure out some coping strategies and skills to help you prioritize, plan, do, and succeed.
