College Algebra MAC 1105: 3 hours credit. College Algebra is an extension of Algebra II and is taught using the Emporium Model (see the description below). Students will be doing their work online with limited instruction. Students are expected to read the material, watch the instructional videos, and complete all assignments on time. If help is needed, I am available in class, before school, and after school. Students are expected to follow the assignment schedule in their syllabus and stay abreast of all assignments. No Cell phone use during class unless approved by Mrs. Robertson! As per Florida House Bill # CS/HB 379 Technology in K-12 Public Schools: "The bill prohibits students from using wireless communications devices at school during instructional time, except when expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes and requires a teacher to designate an area for wireless communications devices during instructional time." Our designated area will be a lock box located at the front of the classroom. All cell phones or other electronic communication devices will be placed in the lockbox upon entering the classroom and will be picked up at the end of the class period.
I teach three sections of College Algebra and all three sections (first, second, and third periods) have the same syllabus (except for the time of class) and course calendar.
Calendar and Syllabus: The tentative course calendar and course syllabus are linked below.
Office hours: I am available before school and after school for students who need extra help. Please contact me by email or see me after class to schedule a time for tutoring or a meeting.
Supplies: Pencils, paper, a scientific calculator that is NOT a graphing calculator, and a notebook or folder to keep all notes and extra papers organized. Students may not use DESMOS or cell phone calculators.
Emporium Model (for College Algebra): The emporium model of blended learning replaces most traditional face-to-face class lectures with collaborative, activity-based work done in a learning resource center or a shared student learning space (classroom) where students access the online course materials. Our classroom offers lots of connectivity–Chromebooks, wireless connections, easy access to online course materials, etc.–and fosters individual and collaborative learning in its design. In transplanting the class meetings to this type of space, the emporium model’s learning goals include:
Encouraging independent student work (often with either instructor or other in-person support available in the emporium learning space (classroom))
Allowing flexibility of learning time: The learning process can be more fluid and allow for multiple learning times; in class, before school, after school, and at home or anywhere there is access to the internet.
Fostering collaboration and activity-based learning among students
Making better use of shared spaces to enhance student learning and to rethink the efficacy of the traditional lecture-style course.
Note: I will give each student a copy of the guided notes for each module that we cover. There will be lecture days each week where I will lecture on the topics of the guided notes. Students are allowed to use the guided notes when completing online assignments and quizzes; however, guided notes, or notes of any kind, are not allowed when taking tests
