Court mandated community service.
Service hours where a family member is verifying the completed hours.
An activity where there is no responsible adult on site to evaluate and confirm student performance.
Donations, such as Locks of Love or giving blood.
Participation on a sports team or a performance of any kind unless participation is considered an act of service.
Paid Work hours where a family member is verifying the completed hours.
A parent cannot solely sign off on community service or paid work hours for the Bright Futures scholarship because the Florida Statute requires a representative of the organization where the service or work was performed to also sign the documentation, in addition to the parent/guardian and student. This is to prevent fraudulent reporting of hours by ensuring an independent third party validates the student's activities.
Florida Academic Award requires 100 hours
Florida Medallion Award requires 75 hours
Gold Seal Vocational requires 30 hours
Gold Seal CAPE Scholars Award requires 30 hours
If a student chooses work hours in lieu of volunteer service hours, they must complete 100 hours regardless of award level.
The Bright Futures Scholarship Program is governed by the following statute
*The eligibility requirements in this publication are subject to change with each legislative session*
