Sgraffito Tile

5"x 7"

Artist Statement

For this project, we were asked to create a tile and design for the tile. I did a detailed, random design. I used two glazes and obviously clay.

My glazes included Sm-42 (mint) and C-21 (blue). I used carving tools to engrave the design into the clay. I used line to create movement and emphasis throughout the piece. I used shape to create a variety of designs as well as a pattern with the squares and clouds. I used color to create balance and unity.

The meaning behind this is the idea of a dream and all of the random instances that occur during it. This project relates to my life as I like to sleep. I’m proudest of the overall flow that it has. I really like the eye, moon, sun, and squares. I didn’t struggle too much with this. I honestly struggled with the sketch and coming up with the design however actually applying it was pretty easy. I did struggle a little bit with the glaze. I fixed it by going over my mistakes with careful brush strokes. If I were to change anything I’d probably do a clear glaze, to make it look shinier. I also don't like how my lines got thinner/smaller, making them look less evident. But overall, I am satisfied with how this came out.
