Artist Statement

For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 4th sustained investigation. My investigation is focused on the lively hood of Maine lobstermen. For this one specifically, I wanted to portray the threat of green crabs on lobsters.

I used watercolor paper, watercolor pencils, and ink pens to create this piece.

For this piece, I wanted to explore a different-shaped background other than the typical rectangle I've been doing. I also wanted to use the whole space and play with scale more. I made the crab bigger and surrounded the lobster to emphasize its dominance and importance over the lobster. I played with different colors to add detail to the piece but also to represent the crab's craziness. At first, I was going to add water to the watercolor-pencil marks I made (as that's kind of what you're supposed to do) however, as I shaded, I liked how it looked and didn't want to change it. The colored pencils looked good alone, yet, needed a little more pop, so I added the ink pens to bring it all together.
