Pastels

Artist Statement
For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 3rd sustained investigation. My investigation is focused on the lively hood of Maine lobstermen. For this one specifically, I wanted to capture an early morning at work through my color and shape choice.
I used pastel bristol paper to create this piece.
For this piece, I wanted to experiment with a medium I don't usually use. I had been sketching this idea of a top-view angle of a lobsterman on a boat. I definitely made the shapes of everything abstract and tried to play with proportion. I chose to make the water orange/warmer rather than its usual blue/cooler color to portray a sunrise on the water but also to add to the idea of attraction I'm looking for. I played with proportion and distorted some shapes to represent the tired/delusional feeling you have in the morning (especially when you have to actually be productive and start working). I want to fix the lobster trap and lobsterman. I feel they don't look good right now compared to everything else. Pastels are definitely hard to work with but also blend really nicely. However, the more you add to them, the more brownish they tend to get and it becomes thick on the paper.
