Artist Statement
For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 12th sustained investigation. I changed my investigation as just wasn't feeling it with my past one and was running out of ideas. I'm changing my investigation to portraits and exploring with emotion. For this one, I painted my friend Luci to show a scared emotion.
I used acrylic paint on canvas to create this piece.
For this piece, I wanted to fully capture Luci's expression from the referenced photo I used. I'm still just focusing on creating a realistic-looking piece/portrait. The photo has a lot of natural and cool shades so I decided not to change any coloring with that. This is the first front-on portrait I've done -- it wasn't that different from what I've been doing but still provided some challenges when making sure everything looks proportional and correct. I emphasized the warmer tones on her face to show how red faces often come with embarrassment/fear. I made the background purple as I often associate this color with fear. I really like the solid-colored background and feel that they emphasize the main focus (faces) of each of my pieces.
