beautiful oops

Sucker Punch

Markers, lead pencil

4" x 6"

For this project, we were given a blob of india ink and had to create something out of it. It's inspired by the famous beautiful oops idea. I wanted to creatively use my blob to it's full potential.

I used markers and a lead pencil to sketch this piece. It's on bristol paper as bristol is durable and good for many mediums.

I sketched various ideas. I often erased and re-drew them until I was happy with the sketch. Above you can see that I originally was going to do a foot. I then came up with the idea of a pig but still didn't like it. I was happy with the idea I had created of a person being punched and gaining a black eye. Both parts of the blob are made into eyes. One in perfect contact, and one swollen and stretched. I used all sorts of colors because I like how markers can easily blend but I always wanted to enhance the highlights, shadows, and colors of the face. Here, I imagine a person in a fighting rink or in a dark alley at night. The colors hopefully portray a look of lights reflecting onto oneself in the dark. The dots surrounding kind of represent the dizziness of the person and the fastness of the punch. I made the fists have no arms as I feel that also represents the fastness of the punches and additionally adds to the abstractness of the piece.
