Artist statement
The main ideas in my artwork are the detailed but still sloppy/messy aspects. I am trying to say that you can create something that isn’t super clean or finished and it can still be good/art. I focused on the ear in the cropped self-portrait to represent the idea of just simply listening. The hand was spread out to represent the idea of opening up and not always being closed and secluded. Despite the hand's basic formation, it is still unique and holds the same amount of detail as other hand formations. The fan didn’t have much meaning except that even though I don't strongly rely on it, it still holds purpose.
I used a 2b pencil as well as a 4b pencil and eraser to create this work. I used value to create a contrast between shadows and highlights. I used lines to create movement and unity in all pieces. I used shapes to create a variety of sizes. I used space to create an emphasis on the positive space or the drawings themselves.
For this specific assignment, I wasn’t thinking as much because two were just copying what you see. I decided that I wanted to draw the ear for the cropped self-portrait because I felt that I could emphasize the detail and cool appearance that it provides. For the hand, I decided to go with just a simple spread-out hand as I had attempted to do other formations and wasn’t happy with how it was coming out. I was again able to capture the detail that goes with the back of my hand. As I said I had experimented with my hand and drawing abilities. For the object, we depend on I took a different route than most people (I think). I obviously thought about using my phone or computer first, however, I thought about it for a while, and right in front of me was my fan. In the summer it's hot so I rely on the fan at night to keep me cool. Maybe it's not something I strongly depend on every day but it definitely has purpose. I had to revise a few times when drawing the fan but didn’t have too much trouble. I wanted to try and not spend a crazy amount of time on each piece but I caught myself spending more time than I needed to on some. I went for the messy but complete look. I often started with general sketches and then finalized each of them with a smudging technique. If I could change anything, I’d probably change how part of the fan goes off of the page. It doesn’t look completely bad however I think it’d look better if it was lower on the paper and covered more of the paper. Additionally, my other two pieces don’t go off of the page.
