Artist Statement

The meanings behind this piece include the idea of feeling as if you are in the cartoon when your a little kid. I placed Camden at the train station, making it like he's going to board the train because it did feel as if you were on the train, traveling and going on adventures as your little mind watches. I also placed the train tracks going throughout the piece as I wanted to show how much adventure was created with the show. There are multiple layers to this work which again show the ideas of how far we would "travel" and how much time we would spend watching the cartoon "Dinosaur Train".

I used colored pencil, acrylic, graphite pencil, and watercolors to create this piece. I used color to create variety and contrast throughout the piece. I used value and form to create movement with the train tracks and train. I used shape and texture to create an emphasis on the stone cliffs, dinosaurs, Camden, and trees. I used lines to create unity as I outlined many of the objects.

I went through many processes creating this first. In the brainstorming portion, I decided that I wanted to used the picture of my little brother on Halloween years ago. He was dressed as a dinosaur which made me remember a show me and my siblings loved: Dinosaur Train. From here I played with the placing of Camden, characters, trees, stone cliffs, modern houses in the back, etc.. The cliffs didn't take long at all as I had practiced them beforehand. The trees were a little challenging but I was able to pull it together. I wanted it to feel like you were just in a scene of the show. The trees really tie it all in. I did all of the objects I wanted to do in colored pencil first. Then I moved onto the paints. This project took me a while however it all came out nicely and was pretty close to my original plan and sketch.
