Acrylic on Bristol

Artist Statement

For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 2nd sustained investigation.  My investigation is focused on the lively hood of Maine lobstermen.

I used acrylic paint on bristol paper to create this piece.

For this piece, I formed a basic idea in my head of how I wanted it to look. I knew I wanted to implement a whale as that has been a theme in the lobstermen world lately (right whale crisis). I didn't do a great job of showing much of a message through this, but I think it shows how we don't always see a problem with things -- and as my projects progress, the theme/message will become more and more evident. I experimented with the background colors (sky and water) to create gradients that mixed well with each other. I chose lighter tones as background colors to emphasize the whale and boat. I chose to make the whale purple to implement an abstract feeling into the piece as well as complimenting the vibrant colors in the negative space.  I am happy with how this turned out and hope to carry on this level of style.
