Ink, Oil Pastels

Artist Statement

For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 7th sustained investigation. My investigation is focused on the lively hood of Maine lobstermen. For this one specifically, I wanted to portray a governmental figure blocking lobstermen from exceeding their lively hood.

I used oil pastels and ink with a linoleum slate to create this piece.

For this piece, I wanted to play with proportion and scale. I played with scale by making the man really big and the boat small. I played with proportion by making the man's hand really big. The carving process took a while but I liked the results of the print and the solid black lines I got from it. At first, I wasn't sure if I should add color and was going to just go in with more ink. But I decided on oil pastels and experimented with those and am satisfied with the end result. I didn't color the places where the prints were (the man, boat, and cloud) as I wanted to emphasize them. I made the other side of the water-looking part red to introduce the idea that the man had a bad side and that the red water was like a trap almost. I placed a cloud to fill in space but also to emphasize the man's scale. I used bright colors to create movement and vibrance.
