Artist Statement

For this project, we were to explore encaustic painting -- this is where you use wax/tinted wax to create art. I wanted to create an abstract night setting of a modern landscape, focusing especially on the trees.

I used wax and brushes to create this piece on a wooden board.

I wanted to use texture but still have a semi-leveled result so I experimented with texture and played with it as I went. The wax dries very fast so you have to be quick and direct with your motions. I wanted to incorporate many colors while still maintaining contrast and value. I don't love how some of the colors mixed/turned out. I also think the trees could stand out more. I gathered that you didn't always need as much paint and the hotter the paint, the easier it spreads. The orange you see is supposed to resemble a light coming from a random house or street light. I also think I can add to this in some way. Additionally, I want to add a border of some sort to create unity within the piece.
