Artist Statement

For this project, I was given the prompt "draw a planet where people walk upside down". My main idea was just to create an abstract, cartoony but still realistic world that portrays the image I had in my head when I first read the prompt.

I used markers and a lead pencil to sketch this piece. It is drawn on bristol paper as I remembered bristol is good for colored pencils.

I started by sketching multiple ideas. I often erased and re-drew them unitil I was happy with the sketch. I knew I wanted to use colored pencil for the background (that being the water and land). I knew I wanted the land/water to be less prominent but still clearly show that it's a planet. Then, everything I wanted to be more prominent is in marker (buildings, people, road, "sky"). I made the people one solid color to represent a modern, yet abstract idea that connects to the concept of a dystopian/different world. I made the buildings pink to add to the abstract/dystopian idea as well as the road and clouds being purple. I wanted the negative space to be black to represent outer space but also to compliment the positive space (the planet).
