Artist Statement
The main idea of my artwork was to focus on the idea of the foot playing the instrument. I really tried to make the foot look like it's strumming. The whole concept of foot playing/doing anything a hand should be doing is different and interesting. I tried to draw more attention toward the foot.
This work was made with graphite pencil and oil paint - paintbrushes. I ran out of a lot of colors that would have been good for this piece (i.e black, white, grey). I used color to create a balance and pattern. I used linework to create unity and movement from the foot to the guitar. I used size to create a contrast between the guitar and foot as well as the toes of the foot and the foot itself.
I thought about what I wanted to do for this piece many times. I had this picture in my head and tried to sketch it out a lot however the angle was too complex. I thought about what angle I would be drawing the foot (front on, side view, etc..). I looked at many pictures of animated feet and even asked my dad to draw out a sketch that I could get inspiration from. He drew a front-on view which was good, but again too complex to then add a musical instrument. I experimented for a while, just sketching the foot. Once finally satisfied, I began to draw a harp. However, that wasn't working. Since the assignment just said a "harp-like" instrument I decided to go with a guitar. Once done sketching that, I began painting. I started with the foot - having a base of yellow and started adding other tints/shades of green, yellow, and even blue. Once done with the foot, I added reds, tan, greens, and blue to create the guitar. I finished it off with pencil outlines to create unity/balance. Even though I wish I had other colors I think the diversity of colors was cool.
