Artist Statement

For this project, we were to explore our generated inquiries by creating our 8th sustained investigation. My investigation is focused on the lively hood of Maine lobstermen. For this one specifically, I wanted to portray a day out at sea, when there's time to waste, so instead of lobstering, a lobsterman stops and fishes for fun for once.

I used an ink print with colored pencils to create this piece.

For this piece, I wanted to play with proportion and value. I played with proportion by making the man fairly large compared to the two boats exhibited on the bottom. I used blue to resemble oceanic colors but also as it's a great color to use when working with value. I was able to bring in many shades but mix them well enough so that it blended nicely and emphasized the pieces I wanted to be emphasized. The print works very well and I'd honestly just sit and stare at it until I saw something. There are natural shapes created as well as positive and negative space. The scary-looking creature also represents how many things are out in the ocean the farther and deeper you go.
