Artist Statement

For this project, I wanted to show the ideas created by the cartoon The Miraculous Ladybug. This is a newer cartoon that may be harder to recognize for my age group. However, I incorporated my sister into this and she watches the show/it's more around her age group. I put the Eiffel tower in the background to enhance the fact that the shower is set in Paris, France. I put my sister, Maddie on top of the building to show how she's almost in the show, fighting crime like the ladybug in the actual show. I made it daytime to match my other pieces.

I used colored pencils, graphite pencils, acrylic paint, and a ballpoint pen on bristol. I used color to create an emphasis on the buildings and characters. I used lines to create unity as I outlined objects at the end. I used shape to create a balance with the buildings and tower. I used value to create contrast with shadows and highlights.

I didn't brainstorm for as long as I usually do. I knew that I needed and wanted to implement the beauty of Paris France into this piece. I came up with the idea of Maddie being on top of a building and that inspired the other buildings and Eiffel Tower in the background. I placed the actual ladybug character in the back so it didn't draw attention away from Maddie. I experimented with the coloring and form of the windows/other objects on the outside of the house. I revised my original color plan just a little. I looked up the landscape of the actual cartoon and chose colors and things based off of my observations. I experimented with the sky and ground near the buildings. I wanted it to have that cloudy look. It was a top view so I wanted to make it look like it was hard to see the bottom of the buildings. Overall, this is one of my favorites for this investigation and I liked that I ended it off with my youngest sibling/used all of my siblings plus me to enhance the idea of my inquiry.
