Artist statement
The meanings behind this piece are the ideas of imagination and how cartoons really play with the pros of it in young children. It's related to me as I loved the Little Einsteins and the ideas that came with it (music, adventure, spaceships, etc...). The earth and steps on the earth represent traveling and how far and fast they would travel. It felt as if I was in the show and I really wanted to capture that so I used a baby picture I have of myself and put it in with the earth to show how I felt like and was there.
I used graphite pencils, colored pencils, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a ballpoint pen to create this piece. I used color to create balance and movement throughout the piece. I used form and texture to create emphasis on the spaceship, me, clouds, and earth. I used color to create unity, specifically with the color yellow. I used lines to create unity with a thin ballpoint pen on the clouds, earth, steps, songlines, and spaceship. Lastly, I used shape to create variety with the earth, steps, ship, and clouds.
I used the sketch of my little self as a starting point for more ideas. I also used the spaceship from the Little Einsteins as a place for additional ideas. Once I added the globe/earth I finally decided (after a lot of thinking) that I can finish it off with a light blue sky and cool clouds. I experimented with the clouds, earth, and earth steps the most. I had to decide what form of clouds I wanted along with the color. I also wanted to decide if I should have the land behind little me or the ocean. I went with land as I wanted more green and it didn't take away from little me as much as blue would. Additionally, I needed to decide if I wanted thick or thin steps on the earth and if they should be yellow or white. I went with thick and white as there was already a lot of yellow but I still needed the steps to stand out. Overall, it was surprisingly easier to progress through this project because I had experimented beforehand and had a set plan. Obviously, I still made random decisions as I went, because they just worked. For example, I added some outlines with a thin ballpoint pen at the very end to tie in everything. I'm happy with this and hope that the rest of my investigation matches the quality of this work.
