New Vision of Old Project

Artist Statement

For this project, I really wanted to revise the painting I did of Luci. It just didn't turn out how I wanted it to and really didn't look like her. I still wanted to use the same reference photo as I knew I could make it look better. I chose to switch my medium, using charcoal rather than acrylic. I really wanted to focus more on detail and making the portrait look less "fuzzy" or "blurry". I used a method similar to gridding where I would zoom in and work on one section at a time.  This helped to make it look more realistic and proportional.  I really tried to slow down and focus on highlights, shadows, and shading. I always struggle with eyes, noses, and mouths as they are usually the most detailed and tedious parts of a face. Yet, with a lot of adding/erasing, I was satisfied. I'm really happy with how this came out and I'm glad that I could accurately capture the appearance of Luci's face and expression.
