Artist Statement

For this project we were asked to create a set of 4 mugs, all having something in common. The subject of my creation is flowers. This is the commonality that my 4 mugs share. I decided to make my similarities through painting v.s actually putting something made of clay as an addition to my mugs. I used clay, carving and smoothing tools, and glazes (c-50, c-60, pc-41, sm-42, c-21).

I used color to create a pattern and unity within my pieces(they all have the same colors, but different combinations with the flowers). I used shape to create a contrast between all the mugs (height difference). I used space to create an emphasis on the positive and negative space (flowers and solid background).

The meaning behind this piece is just the simplicity and happiness that come with flowers. They remind me of summer which is the best time. This relates to my life as I love flowers and the feelings they bring (summer, boating, camping, etc..). I'm probably the proudest of the flowers and some of the mugs. I spent a long time glazing as well as making the mugs. I had trouble with making the mugs in the beginning and getting them to the height I wanted them to be at. I overcame these struggles by slowing down and being gentle with my cuts/smooths. Even though I spent the time on the glazing, they didn't all come out how I wanted them to. I like the tall blue one a lot. I don't think there's much I could do to fix any of the glazings without ruining the piece. Overall, this was fun and I'm excited to drink out of them.
