Feast of St. Blaise

BLESSING OF THE THROATS

February 3rd at 8:30am daily Mass

According to tradition, St. Blaise was born in Armenia to rich and noble parents, received a Christian education, and was a physician before being consecrated a bishop at a young age. He was jailed and executed for practicing his faith. While in prison, he miraculously cured a small boy who was choking to death on a fishbone lodged in his throat. Eventually, those who were sick, especially with throat ailments, invoked his intercession.

During the 16th century, the custom of the blessing of throats arose, whereby the priest holds two crossed candles over the head, or touches the throat, while reciting a blessing. This practice continues today in many parishes on his feast day.

Rite of Acceptance & Welcome

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which one explores faith and life in the Catholic tradition. The Rite is modeled after the initiation process used in the first centuries of the early Church and involves a formation process that includes weeks of study, prayer and discernment.

Last weekend at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, seven people who are inquiring about the Catholic Faith participated in the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome. During this rite those inquiring about the Catholic Church state their desire to become members and the gathered assembly affirms that desire, welcoming the individuals into the order catechumenate (unbaptized) and candidates (baptized in another faith tradition and seeking to join the church) They will continue their formation in anticipation of receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Please pray for the following individuals as they seek to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ while learning more about the Catholic Faith.
