PARISH POST

February 9 - February 15, 2023

Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14. According to church history, he was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians being persecuted in Rome. He is the patron saint of love, engaged couples, happy marriages, fainting, epilepsy and traveling.

our mission: TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO LOVE, SERVE, AND KNOW GOD AND ONE ANOTHER.

Both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (April 7) are days of abstinence (no meat for those 14 and older) and fasting (for ages 18-59, one main meal with two lighter meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity). In addition, during Lent, all Fridays are days of abstinence from meat.

Music during Lent

During the season of Lent you will notice that there is no organ music before or after Mass. During Lent, musical instruments are suggested to be used solely to support congregational singing. The exception to this is the 4th Sunday of Lent, commonly known as Laetare (lay tah ray) Sunday, translated as Joyful Sunday. Laetare Sunday is a little break in our penitential season. Rose vestments may be used and flowers can be used in decorating the altar area. (this year, the 4th Sunday of Lent is March 18/19)

During the season of Lent, there are some chants that are used to set this season apart for us musically. We speak the “I confess” (Confiteor) prayer and follow it with the Greek chant, Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison, Kyrie Eleison which means Lord, have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord, Have mercy. We chant the Our Father. The Lamb of God is sung in Latin – the Agnus Dei. (pronounced Ah nus Day ee) Singing some of our chants in Greek, English and Latin during the season of Lent marks this season with a sense of solemnity.

2023 Black and Indian Mission Collection

The weekend of February 25-26, we will take up the annual Black and Indian Mission Collection. This Collection exists to help diocesan communities preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American, and Alaskan Native people of God. Your donations help fund parish-based catechetical programs, support teacher and catechist professional development, encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and create diocesan structures, such as our own archdiocesan Office of Multicultural Ministry, that support ministry and evangelization in these diverse ethnic communities.

LIFELONG FORMATION & EDUCATION

A Message from Cindy McKinley

It is with mixed emotions that I say “Goodbye”.  With over 26 years of serving in Youth and Children’s Ministry with the Archdiocese of Louisville, 10 of those with St. Albert the Great, my life has been truly blessed.

Working with the Church’s awesome young people and with families has enriched my life.  Many memories of retreats, mission trips, leaf raking, Soup to the Homebound, youth leadership teams, trips to the March for Life in D.C. and NCYC (the National Catholic Youth Conferences), Father-Daughter Dances, Pizza & Prayer in Eucharistic Adoration and Youth Discussion Nights fills my heart with love and hope for our Church!

I have been inspired working with wonderful, faith-filled catechists and classroom aides with PREP, Vacation Bible School,  our vibrant Baptism preparation team, Sprouts team, our dedicated Children’s Liturgy of the Word Leaders and Assistants and the Nursery team.  There are so many extraordinary volunteers here at St. Albert!

Witnessing the illuminating excitement and transformation of children as they receive formation and prepare to receive First Reconciliation, First Holy Eucharist, RCIA and the Sacrament of Confirmation is awe-inspiring.  The youth and children and those who serve them will always hold a special place in my heart.

Here at St. Albert the Great Church there is an incredible team of pastoral and support staff that is more like family to one another and those they serve, giving witness to true discipleship!  My last day here at St. Albert will be February 17.

Know that you all remain in my prayers and I thank God for the gift of YOU!  Remember that God our Father is always at your side, Jesus loves you with an everlasting love that overcomes any obstacle, and the Holy Spirit will guide you and give you guidance and courage.

In Christ’s Love,
Cindy McKinley
