ALMA and VLT Find Evidence for Stars Forming Just 250 Million Years After Big Bang | ESO

This is a significant finding,

"...The presence of oxygen is a clear sign that there must have been even earlier generations of stars in this galaxy..."

If there are stars that have already formed, created oxygen and died 500 million in front of the Event Horizon, it must mean that the earlier stars must have been born and died in an incredibly short period of time: a headache for the Big Bang Theory:

David McClintock's presentation notes from last week:

I. a “Step to Experience Science”

How a train stays on track – 2minutes 34seconds

an edited extract of 1h 08m 50s "Richard P Feynman - FUN TO IMAGINE" on YouTube

Take away: A short bit on something very concrete. Science (and many other fields) encourages observation. So we begin by observing an ordinary thing and figuring out how it works. The photos are from a Google search for "train wheels" I clicked on the tab “Images”

Photos show what a "flange" is on a railroad wheel. Photos also show how/why wheels have a taper or beveled angle so that when the train is on the tracks but off toward one side, then one wheel rides up a bit on the track and presents a greater circumference while the opposite wheel rides down on the track to a present smaller circumference. This steers the train back toward the center of the tracks. It’s 19th century technology, but clever thinking.

II. another “Step to Experience Science” How the World Map Looks Wildly Different Than You Think – 6minutes 19seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPNrtjboISg A look of the world map using the Mercator projection. That map projection has become our shared view of the world. It distorts a lot of reality. Who knew the continental US would fit in the Sahara Desert? Yep the continent of Africa is that big. Take away: If we can agree on a shared view, maybe we can agree on many of the distortions in our view. Then we may be on our way to sharing a clearer view of reality, which seems a good thing.
