Delis

While many people today think of kosher delis when they think of New York City, food maven Arthur Schwartz in his book Arthur Schwartz's New York City Food notes that kosher delis were actually a German Jewish adaption of the even more ubiquitous German deli. German delis also gave birth to the gourmet specialty shop. The Scandinavians, Italians and Poles had similar places where you could buy cold cuts, appetizers and sausages. The Italian and German delis often served as corner groceries. The word delicatessen is itself German.
