Socialite and sometime author and play backer Emily Barrett Blanchard had her new husband, John Emmett Carr, a Hollywood actor, tossed into jail for bilking her of $7,200 ostensibly to back some theatrical productions he claimed to be representing. She became suspicious when he asked for more money during their honeymoon. He claimed the dough had gone into options and research for future productions.

Two “Negro youths” were found guilty of fatally shooting Gustave Winkelmann, 64, the peg-legged owner of a grocery store on Bergen Street in Brooklyn, during a holdup last June 27. The electric chair was mandatory in this case. Newspapers routinely identified African Americans by race in crime coverage although the practice was coming increasingly under attack. Nobody wrote “Two Methodist youths arrested” or “Two Irish Catholics convicted.”

Moe Greenberg, 51, of Fairmont Street in the Bronx was arrested for the 34th time since 1914. His prior arrests had resulted in 10 convictions. This time around Moe was being held on $10,000 bail for allegedly lifting the wallet of Barney Morgan of 156 Fifth Avenue on the IRT subway.

Four men were arrested for stealing and distributing 16mm feature films intended for distribution to the armed forces. The culprits were Nicholas Peruso, 31,of East Harlem, then an Italian enclave, George J, Sinisgalli, 27, of Astoria, and Milton Cohen, 35, and Frank R. Tiriolo, 32, of Brooklyn. Five others in the ring had been arrested Friday.

In Queens, three thugs, one in Army uniform, escaped with $110 after holding up James Kingston in his tavern in Woodside, while three men got away with $500 from the safe at the A&P warehouse on Hillside Avenue in Jamaica. Three men were arrested at 4 AM in Astoria for assaulting Patrolmen Charles Riley when he tried to break up a fight. The three were Michael Murphy,18, and his brother Peter, 27, and Hugh O'Donnell, 26, all of Astoria.
