Crime coverage was the meat and potatoes of the News. Besides the front page coverage of the foiled robbery attempt at the Berkley Hotel, several other crimes made their way into the pages of the Sunday News on April 14.

DA Frank Hogan was investigating the black market sale of streptomycin, the latest miracle antibiotic. Connecticut police closed an unlicensed "nature clinic" following the death of a diabetic patient on the water cure. Thieves hijacked a truckload of clothing in broad daylight in Brooklyn. The police nabbed 190 gamblers in a 24-hour period.

In other crime news, two youths, identified as then was the custom as Negroes, were convicted of murdering a shopkeeper in a robbery. A Bronx pickpocket was arrested for the 34th time. A socialite sued her actor husband for bilking her out of money for theatrical productions. The police broke up a ring that had been stealing movies meant for distribution to the armed services. Three thugs, one in Army uniform, robbed a bar in Woodside and three drunken brawlers were arrested for assaulting a police officer in Astoria. An A&P warehouse in Jamaica was robbed.
