Older Movies and Revivals

Several movies from 1944 and 1945 were playing in art houses and neighborhood theaters on April 18. These included:

  • HOUSE ON 92ND STREET, the acclaimed docudrama about the FBI’s investigation of a Nazi spy ring in New York, starring William Eythe, Lloyd Nolan and Signe Hasso

  • ANCHORS AWEIGH, the MGM musical starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson and Gene Kelly, famed for the scene where Kelly dances with the cartoon characters Tom & Jerry

  • WARSAW CONCERTO (aka "Dangerous Moonlight"), a romantic wartime drama starring Anton Walbrook and Sally Gray paired with THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, starring Hurd Hatfield, George Sanders, Donna Reed and Angela Lansbury, the acclaimed adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Gothic thriller

  • Bette Davis as a Welsh schoolteacher in the screen adaptation of the play THE CORN IS GREEN, paired with James Mason in the spy drama THEY MET IN THE DARK

  • Joan Fontaine in Daphne DuMaurier’s historical romance FRENCHMAN’S CREEK and Ray Milland in the ghost story THE UNINVITED

  • Yvonne De Carlo and Rod Cameron in the western FRONTIER GAL and Faye Emerson and Zachary Scott in the crime drama DANGER SIGNAL

  • Anne Baxter and Ralph Bellamy in the psychological melodrama A GUEST IN THE HOUSE, based on a play

  • Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer in a romantic comedy TOGETHER AGAIN and Sonja Henie in a musical, WINTERTIME

  • Paulette Goddard and Fred MacMurray in a romantic wartime comedy STANDING ROOM ONLY and Ida Lupino and Paul Henreid in a romantic wartime drama IN OUR TIME

  • Eleanor Powell and an all-star cast in the musical SENSATIONS OF 1945, Powell's last starring role, and Preston Foster and Victor McLaglen in ROGER TOUHY, GANGSTER

A number of older movies were playing in revival. Increasingly studios were releasing films from their vaults for revival runs, which were becoming popular.
