City News in the Sunday Mirror

The city was a [lace of endless scandal, crime and tragedy in the pages of the Sunday Mirror. It was a lead, front page story for the Times. Like the other Sunday papers, it covered the Herald Tribune Youth Forum, a big deal that week. The Mirror story focused on the address delivered by Eleanor Roosevelt.

Most of the events and happenings in the city were ignored. On the other hand, the meat "famine" got the full Hearst treatment, while another story claimed that veterans who had used their GI benefits to start up small machine shops found they couldn't get parts. A press conference held by a jilted war bride was also worthy of major treatment. The newspaperfound room to report a rescue in the Bronx and a subway tragedy. Society and celebrity gossip also was the subject of attention.
