The Sunday Times News of the Week in Review
Section Four contained the news of the week in review, the editorial page, letters to the editor, the education and science pages, and special articles.
Much of the news in review section provided more perspective on the situations that had been reported that day in the main news section.
At the top of page one was a story, with photos, about the memorial services at Hyde Park for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who had died one year earlier. The ceremony also was a dedication of his former home as a national shrine. About 5,000 people attended, including Eleanor Roosevelt. President Truman delivered the main address.
Among the other topics addressed in the news in review summaries:
The UN
The Opening of Baseball Season--Sports fans looked forward to a great year. During the war with so many players serving in the military, the clubs were forced to rely on "old has beens." The playing standards fell pretty low but the crowds still came. Now with most of the players and fans back from the war this was expected to be a milestone year for the sport. There was more on this in the sports pages.
In addition to the brief summaries of the top news of the week, section four offered analysis of the news from the newspaper's star journalists and bureau chiefs. The news review section had a weekly quiz, "Fifteen News Questions," testing reader knowledge of current affairs. It also ran copious editorial cartoons, but unlike its competitors, The Times did not deign to have a funny papers section.
The editorial page of The Sunday Times was seven columns of small type. It included the newspaper editorials, the Topics of the Times column and the Letters to the Times.
Education news shared a page with science news in the fourth section. The advertising carried in this section was more limited than inthe main news section and were of a more serious bent-- no furs, jewelry and cosmetics.
