The Sunday Times Coverage of the Herald Tribune Youth Forum

The Sunday Times covered rival Herald Tribune's Forum for High Schools at the Waldorf-Astoria as did the city's other newspapers. It was a big deal with 3600 student participants. The topic was "The World We Want." Notables like Eleanor Roosevelt spoke.

Top space in The Times story was given to the message read to students from Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, who was in Germany serving as chief American prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials. He wrote them that there was no true peace in Europe because the "underlying conflicts which set Europe fighting are not solved.' Jackson said that America had demonstrated its might and skill in destruction but now must not shirk its responsibility as victor.

Former Supreme Court Justice Owen J, Roberts appealed for a better framework for international cooperation based on international law. No progress could be made toward a federation of nations, he declared, if our national government "shall give up none of its independence of action and shall remain utterly free to do as it pleases in any given situation."

The atom bomb was a major topic of discussion addressed by several speakers. Mayor O'Dwyer told the students that decent housing, good transportation and improvement and expansion of educational facilities were what was most needed to make "the city we want." He also emphasized the need for racial equality in education, employment, living conditions and "all walks of life."
