Future Concerts Advertised in the Sunday Times

Among the future concerts advertised that day:

The spring season of the New York City Center Opera was running May 9-26, under the artistic and music direction of Laszlo Halasz. The company, now known as New York City Opera, had been founded in 1943 under the imprimatur of Fiorello La Guardia, to bring opera to the masses at popular prices. The ad trumpeted that tickets were $1.20 to $2.40. It featured up-and-coming young American singers; the Met had a habit of hiring away some of its top talent. The offerings this month were a standard repertoire of "Rigoletto." "La Boheme," "Bartered Bride," "Pirates of Penzance," "Carmen" "Madama Butterfly" and "La Traviata." The opera performed at the New York City Center, 131 W. 55th St. The San Carlo Opera, a traveling troupe, was performing a very similar repertoire from May 1 to May 12 at the Center Theatre at Rockefeller Center.

Marian Anderson was appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House on the afternoon of the 28th.
