WHN: Commentator’s Round Table

“Franco Spain” This was a much-debated topic at this time when the Communist bloc and the American Left was lobbying for an overthrow of this last Fascist government left in Europe. Britain and America were hesitant fearing either the outbreak of another Civil War or a Communist takeover.

WNYC: Folk Songs

Susan Reed

The 19-year old singer was making a name for herself in the emerging folk music scene at this time but she never reached stardom, perhaps because her style was too close to pop for the purists and too folksy for the general public. Her career ended when the anti-Communist witch hunts drove folk music underground and many of its performers, including Reed, were blacklisted.

WHN: President Truman: The Food Problem (rebroadcast)

This was a primetime rebroadcast of President Truman’s address on the food crisis delivered earlier and carried by most stations in New York. He was joined by Herbert Hoover, Fiorello LaGuardia and the Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson in this appeal for Americans to take in account the famine in most of the postwar world.
