Abraham & Straus, Brooklyn's premiere department store, located on Fulton Street, advertised in the main news section as well as extensively in the Brooklyn section. It had a number of intriguing gadgets and gizmos on sale including an electric, oscillating safety razor for $5; you used your favorite double edged-blade (ouch). The Mar-Vo-Kurl home permanent kit was $1.50 and took less than 2 ½ hours to use. The kit had 24 heat pads, a protector pad, curlers and permanent wave solution but no electricity or complicated wires. A refill set cost $1 and the curlers and pads could be used many times. A&S was also bringing back a pre-war hit, the auto-magic picture gun for $2.49. Just point the thing at a wall and it projected a picture.

Namm's, another major Fulton Street department store very evident in the Brooklyn section, advertised cushion foot sox at $1 a pair on the sports pages. Kinky hair was straightened.-men $5, women $10 - at Ollie’s on DeKalb, a block from the Brooklyn Paramount.

Discount department store Alexander's advertised its Bronx store.
