The Columnists
People read the Sunday Mirror more for the columns than as a source of news. Walter Winchell, in particular, was a major draw. Other columnists were:
Washington columnist Drew Pearson
Humorist Harry Hershfield
Venerable etiquette columnist Dorothy Dix
Movie critic Frank Quinn
Radio columnist and writer of light verse Nick Kenny
Nightclub columnist Lee Mortimer
Conservative columnist Ruth Alexander
Drama critic Robert Coleman
Hollywood columnist Sheila Graham
Sports columnist Dan Parker
Feature interviews by Sidney Fields
The paper also had brief critiques by Dr. G. Paul Butler on two books with religious themes. It also had an aviation column, "High As A Kite," by Richard Kenny although it was unlikely that many of its readers flew their own planes. It must have been a vicarious fascination, like reading about nightclubs which most New Yorkers seldom if ever visited except in their minds.
