Cheap Village Eats

Mimi Sheraton cooked at home in her tiny kitchen on weekends but on most weeknights the couple relied on simple inexpensive meals at Village drugstore counters like Bigelow’s Pharmacy, the Chock Full o’ Nuts near campus, the Waldorf Cafeteria on Sixth Avenue, and the all-night Jefferson Diner.

Bigelow's had been at its Sixth Avenue location for 40 years in 1946 and traced its roots back to the Village Apothecary Shop opened in 1838. Like most drugstores of the period it had a counter where you could get grilled cheese and other sandwiches but offered a fuller menu at dinner time. On Thursday's it had London broil. It is still there.
