Sunday Late Afternoon Radio Schedule

Sunday afternoon radio program was as popular as prime time radio. By the early evening hours the schedule resembled prime time and was included in the prime time ratings. Among the most popular network shows was "The Shadow" on WOR and "John Charles Thomas," "One Man's Family" and pianist/orchestra leader "Carmen Cavallaro" on WEAF, which also had a large audience at 6:30 with "The Great Gildersleeve." WABC had "Ozzie and Harriet" and Fanny Brice as Baby Snooks in the 6:00 to 7:00 time slot. Mutual billed its programming from 5:00 to 6:00 PM as a "Mystery Triple Feature." For a lot of men in the city, the big event of the afternoon was the exhibition game between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers airing on both WHN and WINS. Sunday afternoon was also a time for classical and semi-classical music with broadcasts of the New York Philharmonic and the acclaimed NBC Symphony Orchestra among the options.
