2015-07-29 Day 31: Fred Meyer at Last, Mitchell to Sisters, OR

Post date: Jul 30, 2015 3:40:56 AM

Miles Today: 90. Total Miles: 1786

For those of you that have been looking at the little towns that I have mentioned in this Blog and actually attempted to find them on a map, I am sorry. While most maps don't give enough value to these towns to even put them on a map, they have enormous value to those of us wandering the country looking for food, water, and shelter.

Tonight, I am happy to announce that we find ourselves in Sisters. Nearly everyone reading this Blog is thinking, I know exactly where that is! We find ourselves here after deciding to push on another 20 miles after riding the planned 70 miles to Redmond. So, a new single day record for this summer has been set. We put in the extra miles to position ourselves to make the climb over the cascades at Old McKenzie Pass in the cool morning air tomorrow. This pass will be our 7th Oregon big climb and the final one before we reach the Pacific Ocean. (And all of God's creatures say, Amen!).

Today, we found our first Fred Meyer of this summer in Redmond. Since Fred Meyer is certainly one of my favorite places to hang out, Jon and I headed in to buy a cold drink and some ice cream. It was there over cold drinks and Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia that we made the decision to push on. Since it now seems like a good decision, I believe that I will endorse eating Cherry Garcia ice cream before all important future decisions.

Last night at Mitchell, we stayed at the old hotel in the center of town. In fact there were at least 9 west bound cyclists there last night. 2 from Pennsylvania, a father and daughter riding a tandem from Utah, 3 from Europe, Jon and I. It felt like a cycling convention with all of us are looking for the Pacific Ocean.

Because of the extra miles, I believe we have left our European riding buddies behind.

Tom and Eva: I wish you the best of luck getting to Vancouver. Please call if you get the chance on the Oregon coast. Johannes: Also the best of luck getting to San Francisco. Email me upon your arrival.
