2014-07-12: Day 17 Kentucky Rollers 2, Mackville to Howardstown

Post date: Jul 13, 2014 1:07:46 AM

Miles Today: 58 Total Miles: 854

When we returned to Mackville this morning to continue our ride west, we discovered there was a lawn mower pull in Mackville today. Don't know what that is exactly but there are a lot of riding mowers in the area. Sounds like a new experience, but we decided to ride on.

If the Blue Grass country were like the waves at the beach, yesterday's rolling hills were like the waves closer to the shore that are higher and steeper. Today's rollers were more like the waves off the coast that are lower and rounder. The route curved and wandered through some beautiful country today. Each rolling hill took 30 to 50 petal revolutions to roll up and then provided a nice glide down the other side. Miles of that on isolated roads. Very nice riding.

Along the route, we visited the site where Abraham Lincoln's dad, Thomas Lincoln, grew up. On that site is a replica of their original cabin. His mother, Nancy Hanks, family cabin was 1 mile away when she was "courting" his dad. Her family's actual original cabin (now 200+ years old ) has been moved close to Abraham Lincoln's dad's cabin to allow tourists to visit them both in one stop. They were married in 1806. I found it amazing to see how solid these cabins were constructed in the years leading up to 1800. These pictures are of her actual original cabin. This cabin stretches back two additional rooms down the hill behind what you can see in the picture. If her cabin could talk the stories it would tell. Those logs are more than 200 years old.

Tomorrow we plan to take the day and drive down to Mammoth Caves National Park about 30 minutes to the south. So we will stay off the bikes again for the 2nd time this week. My legs are happy.
