Wire Sculpture

Helicopter

For this project I made a wire sculpture. It needed to be a one to one replica of something. The connections had to be done with hooks. For these put the end of the wire in plyers and turned it 180° to make one hook. Then, I would do the same to the other wires and hooked them together before pinching them together.

The sculpture I made was a helicopter. I was making a replica of toy helicopter. I started by putting it on a piece of paper and tracing the landing skids. I cut a piece of wire aligned it to the tracing. On each side I made hooks and connected them. After that, I made the skeleton of the helicopter. If I wasn't sure it I had a curve or angle right on the wire I would hold it by the toy to measure exactly. For the helicopter blades I made rectangles and again connected them with hooks.

Thought his project seems simple, I was actually very difficult. First, the wire bent a lot. So, when trying to squeeze the hook bonds, is would often mess up other parts of the sculpture. Also getting the proportions was hard. Secondly, making the hooks was actually very difficult. If a hook was slightly too big it would be very loose and the bid would not be strong. If it was too small the bond would not work and would unconnect. The final hard part of this project was deciding which parts of the helicopter were essential. Obviously since the toy was not made of wire and was solid, I had to decide what parts are important to show to make it look like a helicopter. Though this project simple and required hours of work, it was very rewarding to see the final project which looked like the original object.
