This project was helping to understand color mixing with oil pastels. I had a reference photo which I split into 1cm by 1cm squares. I then did the same thing with my paper. I analyzed each square picking out what colors were in each. I then recreated and blended them together.
The way I did each box was I looked at my reference and looked at each color in the box. I used red, yellow, blue, green, purple, black and white oil pastels to recreate a blend of these colors. When I first started it was hard to tell the difference between the hair and background because it all had dark tones.
The hardest part of this project was avoiding the temptation to make it like a human face. I had to try not draw it. I made sure to focus on each bit at a time. The eyes and lips ended up squareish so I made a diagonal split to make the them more like facial features. This style was inspired by chuck close who only paints in squares at a time.
