Paper Sculpture

WILD

This is my paper sculpture. This project has very guided material. The only material allowed was one sheet of paper and glue. The goal of the project was to create a sculpture, using these materials to describe a single word/feeling. The way we came up with the feelings were to try to describe the past four months of our lives in a single word. The word I ended up choosing was "wild". I chose this because it has a few meanings. The one in particular I was thinking of was the kind of up-and-down of a rollercoaster, full of new things, and kind of chaotic.

I started out by just trying some things with the paper. I learned if you rolled it up it would hold its shape. I then tried wrapping it around a pencil. This resulted in little curls in the paper. next I cut to similar sized long strips of paper out and rolled them up. Once I got my desired size/shape I put a long strip of glue on the paper and rolled it up again. I took the remainder of the paper, that was not glued, and cut it into strips to give it a feathery look. I glued these together, thinking they resembled a scroll. After this I thought it kind of looked like a bug or dragonfly. I wanted the design to remain abstract, but I liked the way it was going. I made some more little curls and glue them to the front. I thought this looked like antennae. Next, I took my larger curls and glued them to the back.

My sculpture, at this point, could not stand on its own. How I decided to deal with this was to take some of the remainder of paper and fold it back and forth until it fanned out. This was sturdy enough, with the help if a small circle of paper, to hold up my sculpture. I really liked the way the base looked so I incorporated that design into the sculpture by creating two small ones and glueing them to the top. With the remainder of my paper, I created a triangle, to represent a small roof on what now I thought looked like a temple.

I had some other people from my class critique my work without telling them my original word. I had them try to guess what the word was based on the sculpture. I received words like these: stressed, exciting, interesting, busy, up-and-down, and wound. Though no one guessed the word exactly, they all guessed words that described the "wild" feeling I was going for. My sculpture has curls which is why I can see the idea of wound or stressed. The folded base and columns are up and down so it makes sense where those words came from. Each word represents a different part of my sculpture, which as a whole can be pulled together into the greater theme.
